Mission: Chapter Compassion highlights the importance of human connection in medicine through the art of empathy and listening. By emphasizing compassion as the foundation of ethics in medicine, we encourage volunteers to make a meaningful impact in one's story. Providing peace in times of trepidation can only be achieved through compassion, attentiveness, and support. Practicing medicine is practicing humility; the preservation of sincere human connection is the root of all healing.

How we uphold our mission: Volunteers are guided to best serve individuals in an organization of their choice, whether it be hospice, assisted living facilities, or homeless shelters. They have the opportunity to virtually speak with patients one-on-one to lift the spirits of those in need of tranquility and hope. By meeting with patients and their families over the phone or on Zoom, volunteers have the opportunity to grow close to these individuals and make a positive impact during a worrisome chapter of their lives.

Chapter Compassion will hold mandatory workshops for each organization to properly onboard, train, and guide volunteers to adequately provide service to individuals within that organization. After training, students are expected to volunteer at least 5 shifts and attend 4 out of 5 general meetings per quarter for active membership (unless otherwise stated by the organization).

Chapter Compassion is founded upon 3 core values:

Humility

When volunteering, it is imperative that humility is at the forefront of service. There is a pursuit of a greater purpose in being a member of Chapter Compassion, which is to make a positive change. As volunteers, our service to each person makes up only a short chapter in the grand stories of their lives. In this short chapter, we must actively listen, be respectful, and open our minds.

Service

Authentic service leads us to act with integrity, professionalism, and ethics, all while strengthening relationships with those we serve. Dedicating time to willingly support our community is the premise of volunteering in Chapter Compassion. Our service to others is a way to make a difference in their lives and in our own lives.

Knowledge

Empowering one another with knowledge regarding empathy in medicine is crucial for the progression of medicine and healthcare. Raising awareness about the physical and emotional benefits of compassion in healthcare settings inspires future healthcare and medical workers to strive to act with attentiveness and empathy.
